Social Media Manager After College
How To Get Into The Field
In college, I actually majored in an unrelated field. Kinda. I've always been a writer and majoring in Writing for Film and TV helped me write to an audience that have to be spoon-fed information. This helped with my dive into social media. I spent a lot of time jobless and freelancing, during which time I was constantly on my computer, which lead me to become, more or less, an expert of the Internet.

What Do You Really Do?
At 9:30, I arrive at the office and see which new stories have gone up on the website. I schedule tweets and Facebook updates for the ones that will most likely do the best. The main goal is drive as much content back to the site from FB/Twitter as possible. Often I'll get requests from the editorial team to promote certain posts.
Pros/Cons of Your Job
I love that I get a lot of creative freedom. I write all the copy, decide when to schedule posts, and spend downtime on the Internet. I wish I could work remotely, as most of my work could be done anywhere. Even if it was for a couple of hours a week - the long hours make me tired.

The Life of a College Grad In New York City

Living in New York City After College

What's it Like to Live Here?
I love living in New York City. There's always something happening, always a place I haven't visited, always a chance to meet new people and visit new places.

I love the subway, I love the noises, the food is amazing and cheap. New York is my favorite city in America and I haven't even been all over it yet.

How Did I End Up Here?
I went to school in Boston and lived there for a total of six years, after a while my brother convinced me to move in with him to Brooklyn. I bummed around for a year and worked odd jobs until I found one that really fit. It wasn't too much of a culture shock, I'd be visiting NYC since I was little.
My Set-Up
I live in a two-bedroom apartment with my best friend and his girlfriend. I live in a very expensive part of Lower East Side, but my friend bought his apartment and rents it to me for very cheap. It's extremely hard to get the kind of set-up I have, so I'm very lucky. If I didn't live with him, I'd probably live in Bushwick.

Closing Advice

I've had so many friends come and go here. They all say it's impossible to make it in NYC. Even worse, I have friends who move here with huge dreams and aspirations that get totally stuck working awful jobs. The piece of advice that I always give is: never get too comfortable. Always look for what's on the horizon and always strive to be the best. And if someone treats you badly, forget them.
